Boston police are looking for a suspect who stole a claddagh ring from a jewelry store on Thursday.

The man entered Gold City Jewelers on West Broadway in the South Boston neighborhood at 2 p.m. Thursday and asked for the store owner’s help in picking out a ring. The owner handed the man a gold claddagh ring, valued at about $400, police said.

The suspect took out his wallet, made a motion as if to pay, but quickly ran out the shop’s door. Boston police arrived at the scene and searched the area, but could not locate him.

A claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring that represents love, loyalty, and friendship.

The man, 5 feet 9 inches tall, was dressed in a scally cap and had a tattoo of a shamrock on his left hand, police said.

Police asked anyone with information about the theft to contact them.
