Police said they’re not going to file criminal charges against the mother of a 4-year-old Waterville girl who unknowingly brought marijuana to school in her backpack, but they did report the incident to child protective services. Waterville Deputy Police Chief Charles Rumsey said a teacher at Educare Central Maine, an early education program, smelled marijuana on the child’s backpack Thursday. Another teacher found a small amount of marijuana stems. The mother, who was not identified, was vague about how the marijuana ended up in the backback. The Kennebec Journal said police didn’t file charges because the stems probably did not have a high enough hallucinogenic content to be dangerous to the child.
