A funeral service will be held next week for the Franklin children who died after being trapped in a sealed hope chest in their home.
The service for Lexi Jane Munroe, 8, and Sean Allan Munroe II, 7, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Church in Franklin. They will be buried in Union Street Cemetery in Franklin.
The children apparently climbed inside a wooden storage chest during a game of hide-and-seek Sunday evening. The chest, which had been recalled in 1996 for safety reasons, automatically locked when closed and could not be opened from the inside.
On Tuesday, authorities said the children’s death appeared to be “a tragic accident” and urged owners of the recalled chests to replace the locks.
In an obituary for the children, Lexi was remembered as “her father’s princess” who loved to dance and sing and play with her doll, Julia. She was in the third grade at the Davis Thayer Elementary School.
Sean, a first-grader, loved to play with his Star Wars Legos, go fishing, and eat fluff.
They were the children of Sean A. and Gillian E. (Barnes) Munroe. They are also survived by their sisters, Cailin Bryce Munroe, Eva Madeline Munroe and Lilli Paige Munroe, according to the obituary.
Calling hours will be Sunday at the Ginley Funeral Home of Franklin from 1 to 4 p.m.
