Winchester may ask voters for funds to ease flooding

Just over a month after Winchester voters agreed to raise taxes for the $129.9 million high school overhaul, town officials are preparing to request more funds, this time to improve drainage on adjacent athletic fields.

The Board of Selectmen plans to ask for town meeting to authorize $6 million to $7 million to place an additional culvert under Skillings Field. The appropriation would be contingent on voters at the ballot approving a debt exclusion, a temporary tax increase to repay debt.

The project would be the latest in a series that the town is undertaking to alleviate chronic flooding along the Aberjona River. Officials want to schedule the culvert installation during the high school construction because a portion of Skillings Field will be torn up as part of that project.

The timing of the funding request has not yet been determined.
