So far, the new year has translated into a fresh start for Marshfield’s Jay Matthews, a sophomore on the men’s hockey team at Wesleyan University.
And his coach, Chris Potter, is hoping that results in a few more scoring opportunities for the Thayer Academy graduate.
After connecting for a pair of goals in an 8-5 loss to Hamilton in late November, Matthews was scoreless in the final five games of the first semester.
But in the Cardinals’ first game back after the break, the 6-foot, 185-pound left wing scored the tying goal in the third period and then assisted on the winner 32 seconds later in a 4-2 win over New England College.
He scored two more goals a night later, including the winner, in a 4-3 win over SUNY Canton.
