The state open burning season began on Jan. 15 and will extend through May 1. During that period, residents who obtain a permit from the Fire Department can conduct outdoor burning of brush and tree trimmings on their property. No burning of leaves, grass, or construction debris is allowed. Season permits cost $10 and can be obtained at the Central Fire Station at 21 Town Hall Ave. Residents who obtain a permit must call the Fire Department’s open air burning information telephone line on the day they wish to burn to see if it is authorized that day. The information line number is 978-640-4419. Burning is not authorized when it is deemed unsafe due to atmosphere conditions such as high winds or extreme dry spells.
