A car fire on the northbound side of the O’Neill Tunnel generated heavy smoke, forcing lane closures this afternoon, State Police said.
Just before 1 p.m. State Police reported that two lanes were closed prior to Exit 23 (Government Center). The Boston Fire Department responded to the scene, where a Subaru station wagon’s engine was burning, said fire department spokesman Steve MacDonald.
No injuries were reported, said MacDonald.
Shortly after 1 p.m., State Police said all the lanes heading north had to be closed due to heavy smoke. A few minutes later, State Police reported that the fire had been extinguished and one lane had reopened.
All lanes were open again by about 1:30 p.m.
Traffic cleared shortly after the lanes reopened, said MacDonald.
