Two South Boston men were arrested early this morning after they allegedly hurled rocks at the glass front door of a gas station, broke in, and stole cigarettes, Boston police said.

Mark Powell, 48, and David Sweetser, 46, allegedly broke into a Gulf gas station on L Street in South Boston at 1:30 a.m. The men crawled through the broken glass and stole boxes of Marlboro cigarettes, police said.

Witnesses called police, and said the two men had fled in a gray car. When officers arrived on the scene they found several packs of cigarettes on the ground around the station. They then found the two men in the car in the area of East 5th Street and L Street.

When officers opened the door of the car, they found a garbage bag filled with cigarettes, police said.

Police arrested the men without incident for breaking and entering, intent to commit a felony, and buying, receiving, or concealing stolen goods. One of the suspects had injuries on his left hand, but he refused medical attention, police said.

Both men are to be arraigned today in the South Boston Division of the Boston Municipal Court later today, according to the Suffolk District Attorney’s office.
