A 6-year-old boy playing in the backyard of his home was wounded Saturday when his 16-year-old neighbor allegedly shot him with a high-powered BB gun, Wareham police said today.
Police said they were called to Swifts Beach Road in Wareham Saturday to assist the boy, who had been shot in the left shoulder from an “unknown source.” The boy was first treated at Tobey Hospital, but then taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Rhode Island after doctors found the pellet was moving inside the child’s body.
“The 6 year old boy returned home after being treated at the hospital for the injury, which was determined to be non-life-threatening,’’ police said.
At the scene, police executed a search warrant at the neighboring home and recovered two Airsoft BB rifles and a supply of pellets from an upstairs area of the home, all of which police allege belonged to the 16-year-old neighbor.
Police have now charged the teenager with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (the BB gun) and being a minor discharging a BB gun. The case is pending in Wareham District Court, police said.
The names of the victim and his neighbor were not released because both are juveniles, police said.
