The Red Line experienced severe delays this evening due to multiple disabled trains, authorities said.
A tweet from the MBTA announced moderate delays at 5:18 p.m., which were later raised to severe delays half an hour later. The alert was canceled and regular operations resumed at around 7 p.m.
According to MBTA deputy press secretary Kelly Smith, there had been an earlier disabled train at the Charles/MGH station this afternoon. Coupled with two additional disabled trains later on, the Red Line was left backed up for hours, said Smith.
The causes of the train breakdowns are unclear at this time, said Smith, as the cars are being brought in for inspection.
