A cache of weapons was found Tuesday in the Dartmouth home of a man who had allegedly threatened to harm people at a Rhode Island university, police said.

Kevin Pacheco, 36, was arrested after an eight-hour standoff with State and local police, including SWAT officers, at his 209 Richard St. residence, said Dartmouth Police Chief Timothy Lee.

Dartmouth police released a photo of two pistols and four rifles taken from the home. A search of Pacheco’s home also yielded ammunition, and books about becoming a serial killer and making methamphetamine, Lee said.

Pacheco, a former student at Roger Williams University, sent a threatening e-mail to a group of faculty and administrators at the university’s law school, the school said.

Pacheco said he would injure community members at the university’s campuses in Bristol and Providence, Lee said.

“Pacheco is a former law school student who was last enrolled during the Fall 2012 semester,” university spokesman Brian Clark said Tuesday in a statement. “Until the e-mail received this morning, there had been no direct interaction with him in more than nine months.”

University and Bristol police contacted Dartmouth police and asked them to check Pacheco’s Dartmouth residence, where he was believed to be hiding. Pacheco’s family members also notified Dartmouth police that he had “extensive weapons,” in the home, said Lee.

Officers waited at the house beginning at about 11 a.m., setting up barricades and blocking off the street, but Pacheco refused to come out, said Lee.

Police negotiated with Pacheco via text message. They turned off the power to the house at 6 p.m. Pacheco agreed to come out just after 7 p.m., said Lee.

“We were intent on waiting,” said Lee.

Pacheco is currently being evaluated at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, according to Dartmouth Police Detective Kyle Costa.

Pacheco faces charges in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and is awaiting arraignment in Massachusetts, said Costa.

The university is stepping up security today, said Clark.
