In the early jockeying for medical marijuana facilities, Norwell got out in front. But it was left behind when the state last week granted the first 20 licenses to open the dispensaries.
The 20 communities that will get dispensaries were selected for their geographic distribution, their security measures, and how quickly the facilities could open, according to a press release from the state Department of Public Health.
It seems that population, too, was a determining factor. That worked against Norwell and in favor of three large communities south of Boston — Plymouth, Brockton, and Quincy. Full story for BostonGlobe.com subscribers.
