An elderly woman was seriously injured Monday morning when an MBTA bus hit her as she walked in Uphams Corner, authorities said.
Joseph O’Connor, superintendent-in-chief of the MBTA Transit Police, said the driver was on Dudley Street, making a left onto Columbia Road when he struck the woman.
The woman, in her 70s, was in critical condition Monday evening, said MBTA spokeswoman Kelly Smith.
The driver was taken to a hospital for stress-related ailments, O’Connor said at the scene. T police are looking into solar glare as a possible factor in the accident, he said.
The T police accident reconstruction team examined the scene, and the driver’s blood was tested for alcohol or drugs, a routine step in such accidents, O’Connor said.
He said there was “an active crime scene investigation” in the crosswalk.
Roads remained blocked in the area into the afternoon, and onlookers gathered in the aftermath of the incident.
The woman, who was not identified by authorities, was transported to Boston Medical Center, said Nick Martin, a Boston EMS spokesman.
