City Council President Bill Linehan, who was embroiled in a controversy over who has the right to host the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast, has announced that he will skip the breakfast entirely and will instead travel to Limerick, Ireland to march in that city’s parade.

In September, Linehan became embroiled in a controversy over who should have the right to host South Boston’s famed St. Patrick’s Day breakfast. Last March, Linehan served as interim host, but was reluctant to hand over hosting duties for this year’s breakfast to Linda Dorcena Forry, the newly elected senator for the First Suffolk Senate District.

Linehan declined to be interviewed for this story, but in the release, he said “The City of Limerick is a very special place. It is a true honor to be personally invited to participate, as a civic leader, in these events.”
