Lieutenant John Balfe retires after 31 years with police force

Lieutenant John Balfe recently retired after 31 years with the Police Department. Balfe joined the department after graduating from the Boston Police Academy in 1983. Starting as a patrol officer, he was promoted to sergeant in 1991 and to lieutenant in 1998. During his tenure as lieutenant, he served as a shift commander. A former basketball player at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, Balfe worked for the former state Department of Youth Services before becoming an Everett police officer. “John is a true professional law enforcement officer,” Police Chief Steven A. Mazzie said in a prepared statement. “He served as a mentor to all officers in the Everett Police Department. His professionalism and knowledge will be missed and he was appreciated by all who knew him.”
