State Education Commissioner Mitchell Chester is recommending probation for the 5-year-old Dorchester Collegiate Academy Charter School, because of low MCAS scores.
If the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education approves the request Tuesday, Dorchester Collegiate will be the second Boston charter school on probation for poor performance.
It comes as charter school advocates are pushing to increase the cap on charter schools in Boston so that more can open based on the premise that these independently run schools are supposed to offer a stronger educational alternative to the city’s school system.
