A 40-year-old Randolph man was arrested over the weekend in Boston after he allegedly tossed 1.6 kilograms of cocaine from his car while being chased by police, police said.
Officers saw Ernesto Soto Jr. illegally parked at the bus stop on Columbia Road in Roxbury at about 8 p.m. Saturday. They attempted to approach the car and issue a parking ticket, but when they activated their sirens, the car sped away, police said.
Police followed the vehicle and stopped it near Waumbeck and Warren Streets. They placed Soto in custody and found his driver’s licence had been revoked, police said.
Officers searched the car and allegedly found more than $50,000 in cash in a plastic bag in the front seat. A K-9 unit was summoned to check for drugs, police said.
The front window of the car had been rolled down at the time of the stop and the vehicle was cold, so officers suspected Soto had tossed the drugs out a window during the brief pursuit, police said.
After a short search of the area, officers allegedly found a plastic bag containing a large brown package on Waumbeck Street. Officers also allegedly found a white brick, believed to be pressed cocaine.
Both packages, weighing a total of 1.6 kilograms, tested positive for cocaine, police said.
The money and drugs were seized and turned in as evidence, police said.
Soto was arrested and charged with trafficking Class B drugs (200 grams or more), failure to stop for a police officer, use of a motor vehicle without authority, operating after license was suspended or revoked, and driving to endanger. It was his second trafficking arrest, police said.
He is to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court later today.Jacqueline Tempera can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. Follow her on twitter @jacktemp
