The Peabody Area Chamber of Commerce is inviting the public to its annual Ferrin Community Service Awards ceremony this Wednesday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in Wiggin Auditorium in City Hall. The awards recognize individuals and businesses who are notable contributors to the community. Heather Murray will receive this year’s Mary Upton Ferrin Award, which goes to a woman who demonstrates leadership, serves as a role model, and champions humanitarian efforts. As a young single mother, Murray faced challenges that led her to seek assistance from Citizens for Adequate Housing, a Peabody-based shelter and affordable housing organization. By pursuing education and job training, she overcame those difficulties, building a career as a business owner and real estate agent, according to the chamber. Today Murray is an active volunteer and board member for Citizens for Adequate Housing. Burtons Grill will be honored with the Business Leadership Award. The Desiree King Award, which recognizes a woman business owner who embodies an entrepreneurial spirit and serves as an inspiration to others, will go to Karen Batchelder, owner of Karen’s Ballroom Dancing & Fitness. Community Spirit awards are being presented to Susan Ring Brown, Joan Morrissey, and Colleen Derrivan. Marjorie Clapprood, a former state legislator and talk show host, will serve as keynote speaker.
