The lawyer of the nephew who allegedly shot Boston-based reality TV star Raymond Scott says his client was protecting himself, the Boston Globe reports.
Scott, who goes by the stage name Benzino, was allegedly shot by his nephew, Gai Scott, Saturday during the funeral procession for Benzino’s mother, Mary Scott, who passed away on March 20.
Gai Scott is charged with armed assault with intent to murder. He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment in Plymouth District Court Monday morning. He was ordered to be held without bail.
Raymond Scott spoke with the Boston Globe from his bed at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth on Saturday. He said he had planned to skip his mother’s funeral because of an ongoing family feud, but happened upon the procession on Route 3 while on his way to meet a friend in Plymouth.
“I looked over, there was a car, and all I saw was a gun shooting at me,” Scott told the Globe.
Scott was shot on the upper arm and back.
Part of Route 3 south was shut down Saturday afternoon after the shooting during the funeral procession on the highway.
According to the Duxbury Police Department, Gai Scott was taken into custody shortly after the shooting. No other suspects are being sought.
After the shooting, the funeral procession continued to St. Peter’s Church in Plymouth while investigators searched the area.
