A coalition of two dozen small, rural states, including those in New England, the Midwest and the South, is clamoring to increase its share of federal research dollars that is now disproportionately awarded to Boston scientists. But the move to spread a limited pot of research money to scientists in a wider number of states has sparked handwringing among some Bay State researchers, who fear that the push by lawmakers representing those regions threatens Boston’s continued dominance.
