Hingham officials and residents are objecting to a sudden change in plans for a 20-unit affordable-housing development at 895 and 901 Main St., after developers shifted their vision from eight multifamily houses to one 65,000-square-foot apartment-style building.

Hingham leaders have asked state officials to reconsider approval for the project, noting in a letter sent March 28 that developers from SEB LLC have replaced their year-old plans for a New England village-style development – including yard space, front porches, and white picket fences – with a single massive building and no additional amenities.
