Selectmen receive final report from public safety complex committee

Selectmen received a final report late last month from town planner Martha Taylor and the public safety complex committee. Selectmen voted to dissolve the committee, and in turn created a new committee that will pursue other options for the building deficiencies at the Police Department and Town Hall. The new committee comprises many members of the former committee, including Taylor, town administrator Tracy Blais, building commissioner Sam Joslin, John Lucey Jr. of the Police Department, and Eric Svahn, a citizen representative. The town had been in talks with Protection Fire Company No. 2 to purchase parcels on Morgan Avenue for a new public safety complex, but those stalled when an agreement could not be reached. Other options, Taylor said, include leasing property from the Governor’s Academy, or configuring a new makeup for the existing Town Hall and Police Station at 25 High Road. She stressed the importance of going forward, telling selectmen that identified deficiencies “remain, they are not going away, they get worse every day.” In other news, selectmen set the annual town election for May 13, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
