State students are wild about robotics

The bleachers packed to the rafters with raucous supporters, Bridgewater State University’s gymnasium felt more like it was hosting a state basketball tournament last month than the Massachusetts high school robotics competition.

The tension was palpable as two Natick High teams—Hank’s Tanks and Aluminum Cobblers—squared off in the final match of the elimination round and went to a tiebreaker before Hank’s Tanks advanced to the regional competition that was held last weekend in Pennsylvania.

Students from Natick, Lexington, Lincoln, Sharon, Sheffield and New Bedford were among 72 teams from Maine to Virginia at the East Super-Regional Championship Tournament.

The Lincoln-based GearTicks and Lexington High’s 2 Bits and a Byte advanced to the 2013-2014 First Tech Challenge World Championships April 23 to 26 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis.
