A national report found that New Englanders aren’t eating enough fruit and vegetables.

New Englanders aren’t eating enough fruit and vegetables, according to a new report released this month by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The US dietary guidelines recommend at least five servings of fruit and vegetables per day. However, adults consume about 1.1 servings of fruits per day and about 1.6 servings of vegetables per day, the report found.

The CDC looked at how many fruits and vegetables adults and adolescents in each state reported eating each day last year.

Rhode Island residents reported consuming the least amount of fruits and vegetables in their diet compared to other New Englanders, eating about 1.2 servings of fruit and 1.6 servings of vegetable per day. New Hampshire ranked the highest among the New England states, but still fell below the recommended servings. On average, adults in New Hampshire said they ate at least 1.8 servings of vegetables and 1.3 servings of fruits per day.

“I am pleased to see that our state is on the high end of fruits and vegetables consumption, but we can and should do better for ourselves and our families and New Hampshire,” Dr. José Montero, director of public health at the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services said in a public statement.

Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine and Vermont averaged about 1.7 servings of vegetables per day.

The lower consumption rates in certain states may be associated with fewer healthier food retailers in its communities, according to the report.
