The State Police bomb squad has detonated a suspicious device near South Station.
While attempting to determine if the item in question, which was spotted near a Departmeant of Transportation building by a State Police officer earlier this morning, was actually a hazardous device, the bomb squad decided to err on the side of caution and detonate it.
According to the Boston Globe, first responders initially considered the device a “possible pipe bomb.”
State Police have dispatched their bomb squad to the site and the Boston Fire Department has appartus standing by at the 185 Kneeland St., a building familiar to commuters heading to South Station, the O'Neill tunnel and the MassPike.
All highway ramps that were closed during this morning’s investigation have since reopened, the Globe reported officials saying.Follow Robert Burgess on Twitter @bobb2001
