Cambridge Elementary School Teacher Facing Child Porn Charges

A Cambridge elementary school teacher is facing child pornography charges after federal authorities say he admitted to exchanging hundreds of illicit videos and photos and to recording children changing their clothes on multiple occasions.

Josh Wairi, a 27-year-old Somerville resident and 5th grade teacher at the Graham and Parks School, was arrested Thursday at his home following a federal investigation, CBS Boston reported.

According to an affidavit cited in the story, after Wair was notified of his rights, he confessed to having been involved in the exchange of child pornography over the Internet.

From CBS Boston:

Police were able to identify Wairi by linking the email address to his computer I.P. address. Investigators say they found evidence during a search that Wairi had traded and received hundreds of images and videos of child pornography.

During an interview with authorities, they say he admitted to downloading and trading videos and images of children being sexually exploited.

The Boston Globe quoted the affidavit—filed as part of the criminal complaint against Wairi—that says the teacher admitted to using a cell phone and a hidden camera in order to record children changing in and out of their clothing:

"During the course of the interview," the affidavit said. "Wairi admitted to secretly videotaping and using a camera cell phone to videotape children changing in and out of clothes on more than one occasion. He also admitted to setting up and hiding a video camera in a locker room in order to videotape children changing in and out of clothes."

According to the Globe, authorities also claim Wairi said he had offered babysitting services on Craigslist. A friend of Wairi’s reportedly said there was a daycare in the building where Wairi lived.

The Cambridge Public School System released a statement on the arrest:

Cambridge Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Young sent a letter to members of the community later Thursday night, saying in part:

These allegations are deeply disturbing. We are committed to providing all members of our school community with a safe environment for teaching and learning. Consistent with our standard practice in the face of serious allegations, Mr. Wairi was immediately placed on administrative leave.

Young also wrote that two community meetings would be held to answer questions and hear concerns. Those meetings are set to be held at the school auditorium at the Graham and Parks School on Wednesday, April 23 at 6 p.m. and on Tuesday, April 29 at 6 p.m.
