John Kerry will deliver the commencement address during Boston College’s graduation ceremony. The secretary of state and former US senator will also receive an honorary degree from the school during the May 19 event, according to the Boston College Chronicle.
Boston College isn’t Kerry’s only graduation stop that weekend. He’s also scheduled as the keynote speaker at Yale University’s Class Day on May 18.
Kerry is not the only political headliner giving a commencement speech in the Boston area. In June, President Barack Obama will deliver the commencement address for Worcester Technical High School. Governor Deval Patrick addresses the graduates at UMass Amherst on May 9. Former Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano will speak at Northeastern’s May 2 commencement ceremony.
Other notable 2014 Boston-area graduation speakers include Carlos Arredondo and Jeff Bauman, who will speak at Fisher College on May 10. Bauman lost both legs during the Boston Marathon bombing. Arredondo helped first responders at the scene. The pair were captured together in an iconic photograph from that day.
Former Tonight Show shost Jay Leno speaks at Emerson on May 11. Tennis legend and gender equality activist Billie-Jean King addresses Simmons on May 9. New American Foundation president and author Anne-Marie Slaughter speaks at Tufts University on May 18.
Suffolk University is dealing with student pushback over its choice for commencement speaker. The school has invited Anti-Defamation League Director Abraham Foxman to speak during the May 17 ceremony. A student petition claims Foxman holds views that “offend the student conscience.”
