The State Police bomb squad detonated a pipe bomb in a Worcester neighborhood on Friday afternoon, according to media reports.

Police were in the Barclay Street area Friday morning after neighbors heard gunshots overnight, the Telegram & Gazette reported.

Officials, using a robot, were focused on an item found on an SUV by the vehicle’s owner and evacuated the area.

WHDH reported that the state fire marshal said the object was a pipe bomb and it had been rendered safe.

According to a Telegram.com reporter, officials detonated the pipe bomb, which was live and would have exploded if the fuse was lit, just after noon.

Worcester Academy, which was not impacted, is around the corner from the scene.

The Worcester Police Department is investigating the incident.
