A new report indicates that a former Westwood High School teacher accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student and providing that student with illicit substances was able to find work at a Newton school after Westwood suspended her.
A lawsuit is claiming that Jamie Ashworth allegedly gave a student Oxycodone, Valium, and Atavan, and demanded sexual favors in return, Wicked Local Newton reported. But when allegations of an inappropriate relationship came to light in February 2009 and led to Ashworth’s suspension from Westwood High School, the teacher was able to continue working as a substitute at Newton South in September of that same year.
From Wicked Local Newton:
Fleishman wrote that Ashworth was hired at Newton South in September 2009 for a 3-week substitute position to cover for a teacher on jury duty. She then transitioned to substutute for a teacher who went out abruptly on maternity leave and covered for the remainder of the year, according to Fleishman.
Newton school officials said there were no complaints during Ashworth’s time as an employee. The lawsuit is looking to hold Ashworth, former Westwood High School Principal Emily Parks, and the Westwood School Committee responsible for a failure to protect the student. You can reach me at email@example.com.
