A Worcester man was sentenced to life in prison yesterday in the 2009 beating death of his 7-year-old son on Father’s Day, The Telegram & Gazette reports.

Nathaniel Turner's maternal grandmother, Christine Richardson, struggled to control her emotions as she recalled the handmade Mother's Day card she received from her 7-year-old grandson before he left her home in Eufaula, Alabama, in May 2009 to spend the summer in Worcester with his father, Leslie G. Schuler.

Schuler, 41, was sentenced to a mandatory life sentence after pleading guilty on Tuesday to second-degree murder in the June 21, 2009 death. According to an autopsy, Nathaniel died from blunt force trauma to the head, torso, and extremities.
