All were reportedly safe after a 35-foot sailboat caught fire on the Weweantic River in Wareham Friday afternoon.
Two passengers were able to escape injury after the boat’s mast struck high-tension wires and burst into flames, The Wareham Courier reports:
The Wareham Fire Department, Harbormaster, Marion public safety officials, and the Coast Guard responded to the fire around 3 p.m. The accident happened in Wareham near Briarwood Point and the boat drifted to the Marion side of the river before the flames were extinguished, officials said.
“I can’t say how fortunate these people were,” Wareham Harbormaster Garry Buckminster told Wareham Week, noting another boater rescued the victims before authorities arrived. “It’s short of a miracle that nothing happened to them.”
