Emily Rooney announced Thursday she will step down as host of WGBH’s local news show, “Greater Boston,” in January 2015 and become a Special Correspondent for the program.

Emily Rooney announced Thursday she will step down as host of WGBH’s local news show, “Greater Boston,” in January 2015 and become a special correspondent for the program, the station tweeted.

Rooney has hosted “Greater Boston,” and the station’s weekly media analysis show, “Beat the Press,” since she joined the station in 1997. Before joining WGBH, she was the director of political coverage and special events at Fox Network in New York. She also had a short stint as executive producer of ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings. Rooney also worked at WCVB-TV from 1979 to 1993, where she served as assistant news director and later the news director for three years, according to WGBH.

Rooney will continue to host “Beat the Press,” and appear regularly on Boston Public Radio, according to WGBH.
