Police wasted no time evacuating the Esplanade as soon as the fireworks display ended at the Boston Pops Extravaganza Thursday night. Just minutes later, lightning, torrential rain and even hail tore through the city.
By 11:40 p.m., 1,600 NSTAR customers were out of power in Cambridge, 1,000 in Newton, and over 3,000 were in the dark in Framingham, according to the company’s power outage map.
