The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Boston and the surrounding area. This newest alert, set to expire at 7 p.m., is the latest in a series of thunderstorm and tornado warnings issued for central and eastern Massachusetts Monday afternoon.
A tornado warning for Suffolk and central Middlesex counties was issued late Monday afternoon after the National Weather Service reported that a trained weather spotter in Lynn saw a funnel cloud but no touchdown over the coastal city.

The tumultous series of warnings started with a tornado warning for east central Worcester County and central Middlesex County, sollowed by severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings for eastern Massachusetts.

The area experienced strong thunderstorms earlier Monday afternoon. Over on WCVB, meteorologist Mike Wankum reported that the town of Athol was bearing the brunt of the storms, with nearly 600 lightning strikes raining down in less than a half hour Monday afternoon.
