A Saugus man is facing charges for allegedly shooting his dog on Sunday after it bit a 9-month-old child and others in his home. Police say the man was not registered to possess the gun he allegedly used to kill the English bulldog.

Richard Maltais, 50, is accused of shooting the pet three times in the head, and reportedly told police that the rescue dog had become aggressive. Saugus police said in a press release that they found the body of the dog under a deck outside the suspect’s home after responding to a report of shots fired. They also recovered shell casings, a Sig Sauer P230 .380 hand gun, and a Ruger .22 rifle along with assorted ammunition.

Maltais faces several charges including illegal possession of a firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, and animal cruelty, which is a felony. He will appear in Lynn District Court at a later date.
