Danny Nickerson loves birthday cards. So instead of asking for toys or extra cake for his 6th birthday on July 25, he only requested one thing—cards.
He probably didn’t know that he’d receive over 30,000 of them, though.
A postal worker at the US Postal Service branch in Foxborough confirmed to Boston.com that Nickerson received more mail today than the entire town combined.
“It’s just beautiful that people reach out like this,” said the postal worker, who asked not to be named. “It’s overwhelming.”
Nickerson, who lives in Foxborough, was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer last fall. Since his diagnosis, he stopped attending kindergarten, and has undergone 33 radiation treatments, according to WCVB. He receives chemotherapy every two weeks, but his doctors said that children with his disease normally do not live longer than 18 months.
The Foxborough branch is already preparing for the additional load of cards and gifts that they expect to arrive on his birthday tomorrow. He has received about 3,000 packages thus far.
Cards can be mailed to Danny Nickerson, P.O. Box 212, Foxborough, MA, 02035.
