Danny Nickerson only asked for birthday cards for his sixth birthday, and boy, did the world deliver.
As of 2 p.m. on his birthday, July 25, Danny has received over 50,000 cards, confirmed a postal worker from the Foxborough branch of the US Postal Service.
“It’s phenomenal. It’s just phenomenal,” the postal worker said.
The cards began pouring in after Danny’s mother, Carley Nickerson, asked supporters to send her son cards, in an article in the Sun Chronicle last week. Danny was diagnosed with an inoperable, cancerous brain tumor called DIPG in October. He had to stop attending kindergarten and began receiving intensive radiation and chemotherapy.
Danny’s mother’s request took off on Reddit and social media, and the cards began pouring in from around the world. Besides the 50,000 cards, Danny has also received over 3,000 packages. As of Friday afternoon, the Danny’s Warriors Facebook page had over 38,000 likes.
The Foxborough post office is hosting Danny and his family for a party on Saturday at 3 p.m. Guests can make cards, eat cake, and celebrate with the birthday boy.
Then, Danny will probably head home and start opening his mail.
