A 20-year-old Lawrence man is in critical condition and in a coma after nearly drowning in a crowded pool at Water Country water park on Saturday, the Eagle Tribune reports.
Gregorio “Junior” Ortega was celebrating his younger brother’s 13th birthday at the water park in Portsmouth, N.H., when he began struggling in the wave pool, Ortega’s cousin, Nicole Villafane, told the Eagle Tribune.
Villafane said Ortega is a good swimmer but the pool may have been too crowded.
A spokesperson for the Portsmouth Fire Department said they get called to the water park at least once a week during the summer months for injuries that occur at the park.
Calls and emails by Boston.com to Water Country were not immediately returned.
