Marine Battling Cancer Enjoys Fenway Honeymoon and First Pitch

US Marine Jody Nelson finally got the honeymoon he and his wife Trinity waited 10 years to take.

Nelson was diagnosed with stage IV small cell carcinoma last year after enduring a deployment to Afghanistan, both of which delayed the honeymoon for the Virginia couple.

A group of friends put together a fundraising campaign through Booster.com to help fulfill Nelson’s wish to honeymoon with his wife at Fenway Park.

“We wanted to come to a Red Sox game,” Nelson told WCVB.

On Sunday, they did.

The couple was given a VIP tour and premium tickets to the Red Sox-Yankees game. And he even got to throw the game’s first pitch. The crowd at the game stood up and chanted “USA” in support of Nelson.

“I can’t say how much it reaches into you and pulls out your patriotism,” said Jody as he left the mound. “It’s awesome.”

Nelson has continued to work even after learning about his diagnosis.

“Jody is such an inspiration to his Marines as he has stayed steadfast in his fight — even showing up to work in excellent spirits whenever he can,” friends wrote on his fundraising page.

They also made a stop at the Wahlburgers in Hingham and got to meet some members of the Wahlberg family.
