Man Allegedly Impersonated Officer in Parking Space Fight

A North Reading man allegedly claimed to be a police officer Sunday when he threatened a truck driver with a gun during a parking altercation, according to NECN.

Joseph V. Amato Jr., 49, was arrested after witnesses called the police.

According to NECN, police say Amato was arguing with the truck driver for blocking his car in a Main Street parking lot before he apparently identified himself as a police detective, brandished a gun, and threatened to arrest the man. He faces charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, impersonating a police officer, and disorderly conduct.

Amato was held on $500 cash bail on the condition that he not contact the victim or witnesses, and is due in court on November 7.
