Officers acting on an anonymous tip recovered five firearms from a package near Lucerne and Harwood streets in Mattapan early Tuesday morning, Boston police said.
The tip reportedly came from a source who had overheard unknown suspects talking about picking up the bag of guns from the area. The bag, containing five hand guns, five magazines, and a box of ammunition, was found in a dark public alley after the tip came in around 12:45 a.m.
“This is a prime example of why anonymous tips are important. We just got five guns off the street,” Boston Police Officer Rachel McGuire told The Boston Globe. “We welcome any tip that leads to making the streets of Boston safer.”
The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been reported. Anyone with information about the package or who was responsible for it is urged to call (617) 343-4712.
The Boston Globe reports that the number of illegal crime guns seized by officials this year is now 449.
