The sign guiding Somerville drivers to an Ikea Way that does not actually exist was finally removed by MassDOT on Tuesday, two years after Ikea announced it would not build a store in the city and a few hours after Boston.com published an article about it.
A sign-less sign pole now sticks out from the sidewalk in front of a used car dealership on McGrath Highway. (The waving purple ape urging drivers to check out some used cars was also gone by this evening, possibly because the dealership was closed for the night.)
An Ikea Way was once planned for the Assembly Square development, but that was called off when Ikea pulled out of the project. MassDOT, which has jurisdiction over the signs, told Boston.com yesterday that it “missed” that particular Ikea Way sign when it took several prematurely posted Ikea Way signs down two years ago.
MassDOT did not elaborate on why it installed signs for a street that did not yet exist.
