Search for Missing Swimmer Suspended, Citing Lack of Evidence

Crews have called off a search for a boy that reportedly never resurfaced after diving into waters off the New Bedford coast Friday night, with officials pointing to a lack of evidence that anyone actually disappeared.

Police told The Boston Globe that a young boy about 12 years old was reported missing around 6 p.m. in water at Fort Taber near East Rodney French Boulevard. After searching for hours, authorities could not locate a body and said no one matching the child’s description was reported missing.

“We always appreciate the public’s vigilance – and the reporting source did exactly the right thing by contacting us,” Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Michael Caianello told WBZ News. “But with no reports of any missing people or additional sightings on the area, in this case, we believe it was a false alarm.”
