Hub's Boylston Street to get a 'grand' makeover for $3.6m

Effort scaled back from original plan

Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, in partnership with local businesses, today will announce a $3.6 million effort to beautify Boylston Street and turn it into one of the city's "grand boulevards," complete with new lights, trees, and fixtures.

The plan is a scaled-back version of the mayor's long-term goal to find state money to overhaul Boylston Street. That idea lost steam in recent months because of the state's fiscal crisis, said Harry Collings, executive director of the Boston Redevelopment Authority.

Instead, the city is sprucing up the street -- home to the Boston Public Library, Copley Square, and dozens of restaurants, bars, and shops -- with $1.5 million from its capital budget, $2.1 million in private funds, and help from the Back Bay Association.

"Boylston Street is a great walking street," Menino said yesterday, adding that minor details are "what makes the city work -- when you have the streets, the lights, the trees -- it sends the right message about the city."

The plan calls for replacing the varied existing lights with new ones, which are shaped like acorns. The fixtures will be outfitted with electrical outlets, enabling the city to hang holiday lights. One hundred new trees will be planted, and new medians are also planned, as are hanging flower baskets for each light pole. New trash receptacles and banners for light poles will also be installed.

The work should conclude in the spring, Collings said.
