Pedestrian, 81, killed by car; wife injured

An 81-year-old Wakefield man was killed and his wife was seriously hurt yesterday when a Nissan Altima on North Avenue jumped the curb and struck the two pedestrians at about 5 p.m., pinning the man against a fence, authorities said. Joseph Longo died, and his wife, Concetta, 80, was listed in serious condition at Winchester Hospital, police said. The driver of the car, whose name was not released, was seriously injured and hospitalized at an undisclosed location. Police are investigating.

Imprisoned rapist, 90, dies in hospital

Leo Breadmore, a 90-year-old Holbrook man serving a 40- to 60-year sentence for rape of a child under 16, died last night at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, Department of Correction spokeswoman Diane Wiffin said. Breadmore began serving his sentence in September 1992 after he was convicted of raping two family members and threatening to have them killed if they testified against him. The cause of death could not be released, Wiffin said.

Ohio woman sentenced in fraud scheme

An Ohio woman was sentenced in Boston Federal Court yesterday to two years' probation in a scheme to defraud Compaq Computer Corp. of more than $3.1 million. Janice G. Douglas, 61, of Bratenahl, also was required to pay a $7,500 fine for her role in the 2002 crime. Douglas pleaded guilty to two counts of mail fraud and seven counts of wire fraud in October and admitted to submitting a false purchase order to Compaq. A professor at Case Western Reserve University Medical School, Douglas submitted an order claiming that the university would buy and use the equipment, when in fact the goods were to be re-sold in England and Canada. Codefendant Anthony Sallee, 46, of Ashtabula, Ohio, who rented a warehouse to store the equipment, pleaded guilty to his involvement in 2003 and was sentenced to 2½ years in prison.

Norton man gets 4 years for bank heists

A Norton man was sentenced in federal court Tuesday to four years in prison for a string of bank robberies from Boston to Brockton, said Samantha Martin, US attorney spokeswoman. Dana L. Rowell, 51, pleaded guilty in April 2004 to robbing five banks in nine days in January 2004. The US district judge ordered Rowell to pay $4,044 in restitution to the banks and to serve three years of supervised release after he concludes his sentence. His place of imprisonment will be determined by the Bureau of Prisons, officials said.

2 drug dealers sentenced in heroin death

Two men were sentenced to close to 10 years each in prison this week for providing the heroin that killed a 19-year-old Wilmington man in 2002, the US attorney's office reported. Daniel Stella, 37, of Lawrence, was sentenced to 9½ years in prison, and Saul Melendez, 31, of Methuen, was sentenced to nine years, officials said. Wilmington police discovered Matthew Lessard's body on Feb. 20, 2002, at a residence in Wilmington. The medical examiner determined he died from an overdose, according to the US attorney's office. Authorities identified Stella, Melendez, and a third man as the source of the heroin. Melendez and Stella pleaded guilty to drug charges and agreed not to contest that the heroin they sold resulted in Lessard's death, according to the US attorney's office.

Driver pleads not guilty to hitting officer

A man with addresses in both Saugus and Lowell pleaded not guilty yesterday to charges he struck a police officer with his car, the Essex district attorney's office said. Jonathan Goldstein, 33, allegedly hit Officer Frank McKinnon as he attempted to question Goldstein in the parking lot of the Cash Converters store in Saugus on Monday. McKinnon sustained nonlife-threatening injuries. Goldstein was ordered held on $20,000 cash bail on charges that included assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, and larceny of a motor vehicle. He is scheduled to return to Lynn District Court on April 20.

Husband to be arraigned in slaying

A Cambridge man is scheduled to be arraigned today on charges he murdered his wife, an East Boston High School teacher, in their apartment last month, the Middlesex district attorney's office said yesterday. Damion Linton, 25, allegedly strangled Andrea Harvey, 28, after she discovered that Linton had been secretly dating another woman. Linton was indicted by a Middlesex grand jury on March 22.
