A refrigerant leak at a fish-processing plant near Logan Airport yesterday forced the closing of many roads and bridges in the Eagle Hill area, said Lieutenant David Pfeil of the Boston Fire Department. The leak from a 4,200-gallon ammonia tank at the Channel Fish plant was called in shortly before 6 p.m. More than 80 firefighters responded to the scene, including a hazardous-materials team. Boston and Chelsea police blocked incoming traffic to the area for almost three hours. Pfeil said that no one was injured as a result of the leak and that the incident caused no disruption to airport operations.
Drill will simulate terror attack at Logan
The mayor's Office of Homeland Security and the Massachusetts Port Authority announced that they will conduct a simulated terrorist attack Saturday at Logan International Airport. Code-named Operation Atlas, the full-scale exercise will simulate a terrorist hijacking of an airliner en route from Paris to Chicago. The exercise will help officials assess the ability of first-responders to react to a high-level threat under US Department of Homeland Security guidelines.

Bill would ban use, sale of OxyContin
State Senator Steven A. Tolman has filed a bill to ban the production, sale, and possession of OxyContin, a highly addictive prescription pain drug. The measure filed Friday would provide the same penalties as apply to those who distribute heroin, or a minimum of 10 years in prison, he said. Dr. Alan M. Harvey, president of the Massachusetts Medical Society, said that he drug is ''entirely appropriate under controlled medical supervision" and that his group would prefer to await the results of a state commission exploring the abuse before a bill advances.
Immigration foes vow to fight tuition plan
A coalition of immigration opponents pledged yesterday to fight a bill that would provide in-state college tuition rates to illegal immigrants. Bob Casimiro, executive director of the Massachusetts Coalition for Immigration Reform, said his group is circulating letters to lawmakers urging them to vote against the bill. Casimiro contends that the legislation could create a financial liability for Massachusetts. Other coalition members support the view of Governor Mitt Romney, who objects to giving benefits to people who are living in the United States illegally.

Police speed analysis in rape caseState Police are expediting analysis of possible evidence in the rape of a 21-year-old Rhode Island woman this weekend in a taxicab near Revere Beach, said Jake Wark, spokesman for the Suffolk district attorney's office. ''There was, in this case, a significant concern that the suspect would reoffend," Wark said. He said DNA collected by investigators will be analyzed before other cases. The alleged victim took a taxi from a cab stand near the Maverick MBTA station in East Boston. The driver -- described as a Latin male of medium build in his 40s, wearing a Fu Manchu-style mustache -- said that she could smoke, but only in the front seat. He then allegedly took her to Revere Beach and raped her.

Officer pleads not guilty in sexual assault
A Brockton police officer pleaded not guilty yesterday to a charge of sexually assaulting a woman in his car early Friday, following a detail at Harry's Westgate Pub and Grill, near the Westgate Mall, Bridget Norton Middleton, a spokeswoman for Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz, said yesterday. Daniel MacIntosh was arrested Friday night and pleaded not guilty to a rape charge yesterday, she said. He posted bail and was scheduled to return to court this month, Middleton said.

Motorcyclist is killed in collision with car
An accident in Randolph Sunday killed a 35-year-old motorcyclist and injured the driver of the car. Motorcyclist David McCarthy was traveling east on Mill Street at about 11 p.m. when he tried to pass the car in front of him, driven by Saravung Sun, police say. Police Chief Paul Porter said that Sun made a left turn as McCarthy was passing him and that the two vehicles collided. McCarthy, who was wearing a helmet, was flung from the motorcycle. He was transported to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at about 3 a.m., Porter said. Sun, 19, of Randolph was transported to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, where he was treated and released, a hospital spokesman said. Sun has not been charged in the crash.![]()
