The governor's recordGovernor Mitt Romney called his three years as governor a ''whirlwind of accomplishment'' when he announced he would not seek reelection in 2006. His speech included several campaign-style assertions that may well be opening shots in a bid for the 2008 bid for Republican presidential nomination.EducationWHAT HE SAID: ''We've made big strides, defending MCAS and adding science as a graduation requirement, standing up for charter schools, implementing English immersion and adding merit scholarships. ... In [math and English for fourth and eighth graders], Massachusetts kids are the top in the nation.'' THE RECORD: The Legislature was firmly behind the MCAS by the time Romney took office, and the Education Reform Act of 1993 stipulated that science eventually would be a graduation requirement. Massachusetts children did do better than their counterparts from around the country on the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress. But they have ranked near the top, if not first, on the ''nation's report card'' for years. |
