The governor's recordGovernor Mitt Romney called his three years as governor a ''whirlwind of accomplishment'' when he announced he would not seek reelection in 2006. His speech included several campaign-style assertions that may well be opening shots in a bid for the 2008 bid for Republican presidential nomination.Government restructuringWHAT HE SAID: ''We've streamlined and consolidated government.'' THE RECORD: Romney consolidated 16 human-service agencies into four and eliminated the Metropolitan District Commission, saving an estimated $10.5 million. But some parks advocates say the new Department of Conservation and Recreation is not equipped to handle all of MDC's old responsibilities. The Globe reported last month that many of the state's ice rinks, bridges, and pathways are crumbling and the new head of the parks department acknowledged that he does not have the staff to correct the problems. On another front, lawmakers have ignored Romney's repeated calls to merge the Turnpike Authority and the Highway Department, but he did sign a bill that reshapes the way Massachusetts manages its roads and mass transit, in part by giving the transportation secretary more authority. |
