The governor's recordGovernor Mitt Romney called his three years as governor a ''whirlwind of accomplishment'' when he announced he would not seek reelection in 2006. His speech included several campaign-style assertions that may well be opening shots in a bid for the 2008 bid for Republican presidential nomination.HealthcareWHAT HE SAID: ''In healthcare, we are on the verge of something truly historic: insuring all our citizens. This is something Republicans and Democrats can agree on. ... After more than two years of diligent work, we are close to getting the job done. I am con. dent we will.'' THE RECORD: Romney has proposed a healthcare plan that would require everyone to have some sort of health insurance, a revolutionary idea that has earned him national attention. The governor also wants to make healthcare coverage less expensive by permitting private insurers to offer low-cost policies with scaled-back benefits. But the goal of covering everyone might prove elusive: The House recently approved a measure to cover everyone, but the Senate's plan would cover only half of the state's roughly 500,000 uninsured. |
