What we liked most: Wandering around the sprawling inn that some guests say has a resident friendly ghost.
What we liked least: Front-desk employees who were unable to answer even the most basic questions about the inn.
What surprised us: The obvious investment in the inn to restore it to its original grandeur.

Rates: $99 midweek off-season to $369 for a suite in season. We paid $175.50 for Room 28 in midweek.
Directions: New London is about 105 miles from Boston, about a two-hour drive. Take Interstate 95 south to exit 83, following signs for downtown New London.
